Food Safety was high on the menu when members of Sheffield City Council's health prrotection service set out their stall at Sheffield's first Food Festival. The festival ran from the 1st to the 5th of June and was a celebration of food. Businesses from all over Sheffield and beyond came to display, prepare and sell their wares with an on-site demo kitchen and community groups able to prepare some very exciting food live.
The health protection team decided to run their stall in conjunction with the following week's National Food Safety Week Campaign. It was visited by hundreds of festival goers who were able to take part in a fun quiz covering the dangers of cross contamination, food storage and handling. Visitoris were also able to take away free fridge thermometers to promote safe storage conditions.
Nearly 400 hundred people participated in the quiz with a chance to win a meal for two. Visitors could also access the Scores on the Doors website at the stall to check out their favourite restaurant's food hygiene award and take away a Scores on the Doors helium balloon to promote customer information. A Handwash Challenge assessed how effective visitors’ hand washing was in removing luminous cream, indicating bacteria.
Linda Haywood, Sheffield City Council EHO said: ‘The stall proved to be extremely popular with a constant stream of visitors benefitting from the delivery of fun, food safety messages.’
