Better Housing, Better Health - Working together to improve health

Better Housing Large

London 9 February 2009

The CIEH has organised a one-day conference examining ways in which local authority private sector housing teams and primary care trusts (PCTs) can work together to improve health.

As a key determinant of health housing interventions play a vital role in helping to reduce the burden on the health service.

Over 70 percent of UK housing is in the private sector and while the majority of landlords and home owners maintain properties to a good standard the private sector is also home to some of the most unhealthy and unsafe properties.

“There are now 6.8 million non Decent Homes and 4.2 million have an unacceptable health and safety hazard.” [Ref to: English House Condition Survey, 2005]

The conference examined how effective partnerships can be formed, such as by the use of Local Area Agreements (LAAs), and how tools in the 2004 Housing Act can be used to better effect to improve the health of communities.

Conference aim
