The Legal Implications of Drains and Sewers

Drains LargeExplaining sewerage law and clarifying your legal knowledge

The legal framework concerning drains and sewers is complex and can add to the pressures on environmental health practitioners. Cases from 2007/08 highlighted the confusion amongst the profession and sewerage undertakers, raising the urgent need for clear definitions of the issues and good practice guidance.

In order to support EHPs with these difficult concerns, this workshop explained sewerage law from an EHP perspective and helped delegates to successfully address the most challenging of sewerage and drain enforcement issues with confidence and clarity.

Outcomes of the event:

  • Acquired a full update on current developments in sewerage law
  • The ability to apply the legal frameworks with an understanding of the issues and situations faced
  • Examine whether the announced transfer of private drains and sewers to the sewerage undertakers would provide some solution
  • Appreciate the appropriate notices for different circumstances
  • Effectively liaise with sewerage undertakers
  • Encourage good practice in dealing with problematic sewers and drains
  • Provided updates on the progress of transferring private sewers to water sewerage companies
