Filling Empty Homes

Filling Empty Homes Large

New strategies for successful regeneration projects

This is a unique opportunity to benefit from the expertise and experience brought in to this exclusive conference by Iain Wright MP and David Ireland, CEO of the Empty Homes Agency.

“Empty homes account for 3% of the current housing stock.”

www.communities.gov.uk - 10 March 09

Areas where there are empty properties tend to attract anti-social behaviour which can be very problematic for local authorities and create a strong barrier to regeneration of such areas.

As the recession takes hold, more and more properties are falling empty, increasing the pressure on local authorities to act urgently to prevent further dilapidation of areas and help develop the amount of affordable housing whilst minimising costs.

Housing minister Margaret Beckett has also urged councils to take ‘firmer action’ against the owners of empty homes after it emerged that only 17 Empty Dwelling Management Orders (EDMO)were used since their introduction in April 2006.

To encourage more uptake of these powers, the Government, together with the Empty Homes Agency, has issued a new guidance with a particular emphasis on increasing the use of EDMOs*.

In addition to the new Government guidance and its application to enforcement officers, this one-day conference will highlight the sources of funding available for local authorities to help bring empty homes back into use.

A strong emphasis will also be put on the importance of strong collaborative ventures between housing associations and local authorities to ensure efficient and successful outcomes.

Combining government insight with inspiring presentations and case studies, this conference will provide you with new tools and ideas to help implement improved empty home strategies for your local authority.
