Exhumations and Public Health Act Funerals

Understanding the procedures, legislation and best practice

Demand for land and redevelopments over recent years has caused a shortage of available ground for burials, and as a result bodies are increasingly being exhumed. With the law largely unchanged for 150 years, many of the piecemeal Acts of Parliament developed to protect health and safety are often unclear and inconsistent. In addition, as more people live for longer and often alone, further burden has been placed on local authorities to dispose of an increased number of bodies.

Local authorities are required to ensure that there are limited risks to health and safety and that any social and ethical issues are handled with decency and efficiency.

This one-day practical workshop will provide delegates with essential legislative updates as well as unique practical knowledge, with the aim of ensuring a consistent approach to exhumations of human remains, to reduce health and safety risks.
