The first successful UK applicant for membership of the CIEH under the new simplified procedure was announced recently.
Robert Dickson, quality safety health and environment manager at BAE Systems, became a full voting member after submitting a portfolio of evidence and an interview at Chadwick Court.
Mr Dickson, who can now use the initials MCIEH, said that full voting membership would improve his professional status and give him more opportunities to network with other members, especially in local government.
He said:
“The CIEH is a vibrant organisation. Voting membership will be good for me and the business. I hope to be able to offer my health and safety experience and knowledge to the wider CIEH community.”
Mr Dickson, who was previously an associate CIEH member, has worked at BAE since 2007.
The simplified membership assessment replaces several existing gateways. Passing it allows applicants to become an Accredited Associate (ACIEH) or Voting Member (MCIEH).
Applicants provide evidence of their professional experience and attend an interview, which overseas applicants can attend in a conference call or through the internet.
CIEH principal education officer Gary Telfer said:
“This form of assessment is available to a wide range of environmental health staff, such as technical officers, and those who work for government agencies, like the Health Protection Agency, as well as the private sector, primary care trusts and other parts of the NHS. We want to make sure that as many people as possible know about it and would encouraging EHPs to inform their colleagues, in all settings.”
