Industry launches campaign to stop sewer misconnections

The CIEH has backed a campaign to help prevent risks to health, pollution and damage to wildlife caused by drainage misconnection.

The Connect Right campaign was launched recently by the Environment Agency and the water and sewage companies.

Misconnections occur when washing machines, dishwashers, baths, showers and even toilets are connected to surface water drains instead of the sewer network, causing pollution. They also occur when roof drains, new buildings or gutters are connected by mistake to the foul water system instead of surface water drains, which can lead to flooding.

Pamela Taylor, Water UK chief executive, said:

“We want a lot more people to be aware that misconnections are spoiling beauty spots and recreation sites, damaging wildlife and causing sewers to flood with terrible consequences for people and neighbourhoods.

“The sewer system is under attack from many sides. In addition to Connect Right, the industry is supporting a national effort to prevent all types of sewer abuse. It is working with a wide range of people on solutions that allow everyone to play their part.”

The campaign is supported by local authorities, builders and the construction industry supply chain, DIY retailers, white goods manufacturers, plumbers, and housing associations.

CIEH Strategic Projects Director Sharon Smith added:

“The damage that misconnections can cause impacts directly on the quality of our streams and rivers.

“The CIEH has been working as part of the national group to develop guidance on how to manage misconnections effectively. We have also been helping the group to develop supporting information for businesses and consumers to prevent misconnections.”
