Lords vote for ban on cigarette vending machines

The CIEH has welcomed a House of Lords vote to introduce a on ban cigarette vending machines from pubs and bars in 2011.

The Lords approved a Commons amendment by former Labour Minister Ian McCartney to ban all tobacco vending machines to make it more difficult for children to obtain cigarettes.

CIEH Principal Policy Officer Ian Gray said:

“Vending machines have long offered an easy opportunity for under-age smokers to buy cigarettes. Recent test purchasing surveys by our trading standards colleagues have shown that despite all of the guidance and warnings illegal purchases are being made in increasing numbers.”
