Move climate change up the political agenda

Publication Date: 8th April 2009

Subject: CIEH

Following work in 2008, the CIEH wishes to establish a practitioner forum as part of its efforts to move the issue of climate change further up the agenda.

It is envisaged that the forum will provide a communication and support network for EHPs who are either already actively engaged in or are seeking to incorporate climate change into their activities, both corporately and externally.

CIEH Director of Northern Ireland, Gary McFarlane said:

“This event is intended to be a professional work shop – not a talk shop. It is about clearly identifying and prioritising the support that would most benefit practitioners who are already seeking to incorporate climate change into their work or are interested in doing so.

“Climate change is one of the most significant threats to public health that the world has faced. EHPs are perfectly placed to help mitigate the effects of changes in climate. They understand the relationship and interdependence between human health and the environment; have key skills and the opportunity to inform their own organisations as well as the businesses and communities they serve.”

The key aims of the workshop are:

  • To identify opportunities to embed climate change activities within environmental health services
  • To identify what support practitioners need to achieve this
  • To develop a prioritised list of interventions to help move the agenda forward
  • To support climate change champions within environmental health services

It is hoped that this event will be pivotal in establishing a forum for practitioners. In order to do so and encourage participation the workshop will be free of charge and will be held at 15Hatfields on 9 June, from 10.30 am to 4.00 pm.

If you fit the description outlined above and would like to take part in the forum please complete this booking form and return it no later than 24 April. Please note places are limited.
