Shape future CIEH policy

The CIEH has launched a consultation on our new food policy, setting the focus for future work and providing a clear framework to seek improvements in environmental and public health. Members are asked to comment on the draft policy by 11 December.

The policy outlines key areas of work for the CIEH onto which detail will be added, both from the CIEH head office, but also reflecting work activities at regional and local level.

Four specific focus areas have been identified:

  • Continuous improvements in food safety;
  • A transition to healthier diets;
  • Improvements in the sustainability of the food chain
  • And equitable access to a secure supply of safe, nutritious and affordable food.

CIEH Principal Policy Officer and author of the draft policy said:

“We really want comments from members on the draft policy. It focuses on the key national policy issues and we want to build up the detail to recognise the work being done in the regions and localities.

“Firstly however we need to confirm the framework and although we have already had some comments, to check if the direction seemed reasonable, we would very much welcome further views.

Utilising members’ expertise the CIEH will work with government, both at national and local level and partners in both the public and private sector to achieve the objectives of this revitalised policy.

CIEH members are invited to contact Jenny Morris with their views.

Having taken into account members’ views and further consideration by the Policy Development Board the final food policy is due to be published in January 2010.
