CIEH Policy Officer honoured by the Queen

A CIEH Principal Policy Officer has been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.

Ian Gray, the CIEH policy officer with portfolio for public health and a Chartered Environmental Health Practitioner, has been awarded an MBE for services to public health.

Ian joined CIEH in 2003, following a period at the Health Development Agency where he led on Environmental Health 2012, a strategy for re-engaging environmental health with its public health roots.

CIEH Chief Executive Graham Jukes said:

“We all know the tireless energy Ian has put into the smoking and public health brief and in the significant effects that his actions, on behalf of the CIEH, have had in addressing this major public health issue.

“The honour reflects not only on the significant personal contribution Ian has made to the achievement of this long standing CIEH policy goal but on the support provided by his colleagues and the movement that is environmental health, demonstrating how effective we really can be.

“It is a proud day for Ian and his family, and I am sure you join with me in offering Ian our congratulations and warmest best wishes.”

Commenting on his achievement, Ian said:

“This is not something you ever think of receiving, but it is good to know that your work is appreciated and the best part is that your peers and colleagues believe you are worthy of it.”

CIEH Vice-President Morris McAllister has been awarded an OBE for his role as Director of the Food Standards Agency in Northern Ireland.

Mr McAllister became a CIEH VP this year having been a prominent member of the profession in Northern Ireland.
