The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced its intention to review Food Safety Official Controls Delivery in the UK at a joint FSA/CIEH Conference in December 2010. In a paper to the FSA Open Board meeting on 25 January 2011 the Agency initially proposed a centralisation of food safety enforcement. The proposals are now less explicit. In a progress report to the FSA Open Board meeting on 12 July 2011 the Agency announced a wide ranging review of the way food safety is delivered by Local Authorities in the UK.
The CIEH wrote an initial response to the review in January and followed this up in July with a more comprehensive document outlining its views in detail.
The CIEH’s perspective on the future of food safety delivery in the UK.
This was considered by the FSA Board at its July meeting.
The CIEH will be preparing further evidence to submit to the review team. To support this work a survey of members’ views was carried out in July 2011. The survey sought the views of members on the timeliness of the review; the issues which they believed would have a key influence on the review, and ideas for evidence to ensure the input by the CIEH policy team was effective in putting across the views of CIEH members.
The CIEH is a member of the Review’s consultative group and will be representing the views of its members at that forum.
