London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games - Looking forward

What is being planned?

The CIEH is continuing to work with partners to:

  • Encourage the appropriate provision of sufficient professional resources to undertake effective public health protection, audit and enforcement responsibilities;
  • Support capacity and capability building within private industry and commerce e.g. through training;
  • Support professional development and encourage information workshops and networking.

The CIEH along with partners will continue to develop professional support and this will include:

  • Working with the FSA on developing initiatives to support local action on improving compliance as part of the food strategy implementation;
  • Continue developing and implement the mobile vending “Log Book” scheme working with NCAS;
  • Implementing a volunteer programme to support the provision of a flexible resource during Games time.

What more can you do?

If you are engaged in planning and preparing for London 2012 here are some more general suggestions for action you might like to consider:

  • Revisit and review current procedures and information and make sure that they are “fit for purpose”;
  • Consider and agree resourcing and staffing leading up to and during Games time, consider any requirements for shared services, joint warranting, annual leave etc;
  • Continue to work as normal with national government agencies and other relevant stakeholders to help determine the most appropriate local response to deliver a safe and secure Games time;
  • Find out if there are any training camps in your area;
  • Find out where the Torch Relay route comes into your area when the route is realised (www.london2012.org);
  • Find out if there are any Live Sites in your area (www.London2012.org);
  • The Governments proposals for the reorganised public health service will have a significant impact on the delivery of public health at a local and national level. The impact and implications for local authorities will need to be reviewed in light of the continuing discussions and developments of the proposed service;
  • Continue to support and contribute to the work of the existing local authority and professional networks to ensure environmental health is delivered in a robust, consistent and joined up manner throughout the UK. This is may involve to working across local authority boundaries, , setting up and contributing to partnership planning mechanisms such as Event/Safety Advisory Groups and sharing experience and expertise as part of a professional community approach;
  • Work with JLARS and LOCOG on food safety planning within Games venue;
  • Ensure you are fully engaged both internally within your local authority, organisation or business and externally with initiatives that are going on. Keep up to date with communications issued around London 2012 through Government agencies, the CIEH and others;
  • Have a safe and healthy Games!
