Good pest management in areas where we live, work and play is necessary to prevent damage to health, goods and property. Its contribution to the well being and continued prosperity of any community is enormous.
The CIEH believes that pest management goes further than simple pest control. It includes managing the environment so that pests cannot thrive or even survive. Pest management activities play a fundamental part in the role of local authorities in promoting and protecting public and environmental health by encouraging good living standards within their districts.
This guidance note seeks to help local authorities carry out their pest management activities effectively. It looks at the health hazards from pests and explains why we need to control them. It goes on to offer information and advice on appropriate control strategies for different types of pest, including insects, rodents, birds, feral cats and stray dogs.
