Assessment of Professional Development

The Assessment of Professional Development (APD) serves as a verification of a member’s professional development, and is the gateway assessment for achieving Chartered status. It is open to applicants who have Graduate or Voting membership of the CIEH. APD replaced the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) from 1 January 2006.

You can apply for APD at any time after qualification, whenever you feel able to demonstrate the skills and attributes. However APD requires the applicant to demonstrate skills and attributes at the level of five years of professional experience.

Part 1 requires the submission of a case study of up to 5,000 words (or case studies, if one or two supplementary case studies are included). Part 2 involves the submission of a portfolio of evidence, followed by a peer to peer assessment involving a discussion on the portfolio. The Part 2 assessment also includes a presentation. Part 1 must be passed before you can attend the Part 2 assessment.

The APD Regulations PDF Icon  provide the formal framework for the scheme. A full description of the APD scheme and guidance for applicants is provided in the APD Guidance Manual PDF Icon.

The current fee for APD part 1 is £75.00 and part 2 is £150.00.
