CPD validates and supports the environmental health profession by acting as a quality assurance scheme for the competency of practitioners. The issues and the regulatory framework don’t stand still, and neither can EHPs if they are to stay on top of their jobs.
All CIEH members have to undertake CPD, with the exception of student, associate and retired members. The standard requirement is 20 hours of CPD per year; Accredited Associate members do 10 hours and members holding Chartered status do 30 hours.
The time requirement is based on calendar years and is assessed on a pro rata basis for any year in which membership begins or changes.
Activities and assignments
CPD includes technical and management courses, and training on new and existing legislation and all environmental health subjects. The regions and Special Interest Groups provide members with CPD opportunities, often free of charge, through their regular meetings and special events held throughout the year. The CIEH provides a range of events which normally comprise core CPD. Our Annual Conference also attracts CPD for all sessions.
Additional core CPD hours can be gained by completing the CPD assignments published each month in EHP. Members will find further CPD opportunities advertised in EHN and EHP.
Members can also do ‘Enhanced CPD’, gaining additional core CPD hours by undertaking a process of reflective practice on other training they have undergone. The ‘worksheet’ contained in the ‘Resources’ section below, guides Members through the process which involves reviewing the training, recognizing the learning that has taken place, considering how practice will change in the light of the learning, and subsequently reviewing this.
Producing a Professional Development Plan (PDP) also attracts 1 hour core CPD. A template and worked example are contained in the ‘Resources’ section below. A PDP takes a longer view of Members’ learning and training needs and accomplishments and a series of them, showing planned and realized professional development, will be a positive element of any Part 2 Assessment of Professional Development submission.
The hours can be made up of a combination of core and supplementary CPD, although at least half must comprise core hours.
The document Continuing Professional Development: Members' Guide (PDF) provides detail on activities that may be counted towards CPD.
CPD records
All members subject to the CPD scheme are required to maintain CPD records, including evidence of training and other development undertaken and entered on the CPD records form.
Monitoring of the scheme is undertaken via annual CPD compliance sampling. Members holding Chartered status are required to make an annual declaration in respect of their 30 hours CPD requirement. Retired members are required to make an annual declaration that they are not working, in order to retain the nil CPD hours requirement and retired membership.
