Continuing Professional Development

CPD validates and supports the environmental and public health profession. Environmental and public health issues don’t stand still, and neither can professionals if they are to stay on top of their jobs.

All CIEH members must undertake CPD, with the exception of student, associate and retired members. The standard requirement is 20 hours of CPD per year; Accredited Associate members do 10 hours and members holding Chartered status do 30 hours.

Activities and assignments

CPD consists of structured training in all environmental and public health subjects. In addition, for those senior professionals operating at management level, then specific courses in management will also count as CPD.

Open University Professional Skills Courses

The CIEH is pleased to offer its members a 10% discount on the Open University Professional Skills Courses. These courses provide you with core CPD to assist you in both developing your professional skills and fulfilling your CPD requirements as part of your CIEH membership.

Regions and SIG Network

The Regions and Special Interest Groups provide members with CPD opportunities, often free of charge or at low cost, through their regular meetings and special events held throughout the year.

CIEH Events

The CIEH provides a range of events which normally comprise core CPD.

EHN Assignments

CPD hours can be gained by completing the CPD assignments published each month in EHN. These assignments can now be accessed continuously via MyCIEH.

Enhanced CPD

Members can also carry out ‘Enhanced CPD’, gaining additional core CPD hours by undertaking reflective practice on training undertaken. The ‘worksheet’ contained in the ‘Resources’ section below guides members through the process.

Personal Development Plan

Producing a Professional Development Plan (PDP) also attracts 1 hour of core CPD. A template and worked example are contained in the ‘Resources’ section below. A PDP takes a longer view of a member’s learning and training needs.

CPD records

All members subject to the CPD scheme are required to maintain CPD records, including evidence of training and other development undertaken.

Members can now maintain their CPD records online using the MyCIEH portal.

The CIEH monitors CPD compliance via an annual random sample of members. Members selected in the sample are required to submit their CPD records for verification.

Members with Chartered status must make an annual declaration in respect of their 30 hours CPD requirement.
