&lt;p&gt;The Sunderland Road area of Gateshead has more than 600 properties, of which over half are privately rented. Over the years, the area has become blighted by badly managed tenancies, increasing numbers of empty properties and associated problems of anti-social behaviour. But at an official opening at Gateshead’s civic centre last month, the council launched a new scheme for the selective licencing of landlords in the area.&lt;/p&gt;
