Smoking ban: 10 years on

1 July 2017 marks the 10-year anniversary of the smoking ban in England, making it illegal for anyone to smoke in enclosed public places and the workplace.

Similar bans had already been introduced in the devolved regions. Scotland led the way in March 2006, followed by Wales and then Northern Ireland in April 2007.

EHPs are responsible for enforcing the smokefree regulations. On the 10th anniversary, our members have been sharing their experiences with CIEH, looking back on what happened when the ban first came and what they have learnt a decade on.

CIEH remains committed to this landmark piece of public health legislation.
