Due to high demand, we are delighted to announce a new Allergens workshop this year.

Following several high-profile fatal allergen incidents at catering and takeaway food establishments, there are lessons to be learned about food allergen management and a need for more stringent regulations. This workshop will examine current issues, with coverage of the updates that the Food Standards Authority (FSA) has issued for technical guidance on food labelling and commentary from an expert witness from two manslaughter cases.

This day is both instructional and interactive, incorporating factual presentations and collaborative workshops. The workshop is suitable for practitioners from industry and enforcement and delegates will be updated with the latest views from both the FSA and the courts.

Learning outcomes:

  • Hear an in-depth overview of the current law and guidance on allergens and receive an update on the FSA’s March 2019 consultation and recommendations

  • Learn how to undertake an allergen risk assessment in practice and the accountability of precautionary statements such as ‘may contain’

  • Understand what good allergen management looks like in catering and small manufacturing businesses, including practical solutions from ordering to service

  • Understand how regulators audit allergen management and make decisions on when to take formal action and the enforcement options available

Hannah Rose

Hannah Rose works as a Senior Food Policy Advisor for the Food Standards Agency in the Allergy and Food Intolerance Team, based in Cardiff.
After studying a Zoology degree at Aberystwyth University, Hannah gained an MSc in Environmental Health at the University of Birmingham, before qualifying as an Environmental Health Practitioner. 

Dr Belinda Steward Moonlight

Dr Belinda Stewart Moonlight, Managing Director, Moonlight Environmental Ltd is a chartered environmental health practitioner and expert witness in the field of infectious intestinal disease as well as in food and health and safety.  She started her career as an Environmental Health Officer before carrying out research at King’s College, London. Belinda has worked on notable manslaughter cases including deaths caused by food allergies and food contamination.  She regularly appears on BBC Watchdog and has spoken about microbiological risk on radio programmes.
