CIEH and the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) have joined together to organise this online membership engagement event so as to inform our proposed response to the Food Standards Agency (FSA) consultation on precautionary allergen labelling. The webinar will also assist any members who will be involved in drafting or contributing to their own organisational response to the consultation. We have put together a panel of experts in this subject area to present the key proposals in the consultation. However, the main purpose of the event is a professional discussion, involving our members, so as to inform our respective responses.

Any CIEH and CTSI members involved in this important area of Food Standards work. This event will provide you with the opportunity to share information, ask questions and help to inform consultation responses
Background to Consultation
Food products are required to indicate the presence of any of the 14 main allergens used as an ingredient or processing aid. However, in cases where there is a risk of unintentional allergen cross-contamination, and the food business has established the risk cannot be sufficiently controlled, it is best practice for a precautionary allergen label statement to be used to communicate this risk. This information can be communicated in a number of different ways, the most common being ‘may contain’. We are seeking views on the use of precautionary allergen labelling from a regulator, business and consumer perspective, to provide a well- informed response to the consultation.
Responses to the consultation will assist the FSA in considering potential approaches to precautionary allergen labelling for prepacked foods and precautionary allergen information for non-prepacked foods, so that the information is:
- communicated more clearly and consistently, in an understandable and meaningful way to consumers, in terms of the form and content of the information
- based on a proportionate and standardised processes for assessing, managing, and communicating the risk of allergen cross-contamination by food businesses
