Judges’ comments:
"A well-written submission which clearly demonstrated the benefits of authorities pooling funding and working with other specialist organisations to make the best use of resources. This well thought out project involved regional fundraising, volunteer working and long term planning, which provided sustainable clean water, hygiene education and handwashing facilities to four remote schools in Africa. Early evaluation suggests a 25% reduction in pupil absence due to ill health, delivering very effectively on one of its key aims - a simple and effective environmental health intervention in a complicated world."
Judges’ comments:
"Our overall winner is a solution that resonates clearly with the founding principles of our profession, which addresses public health through rigorous scientific research to define engineering and hygiene solutions that improve the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing on a generational scale, which has the capability of being exported globally. It really resonates with the ethos of CIEH’s founder, Edwin Chadwick, and the work he started reforming the “Poor Laws” over a century ago."
Judges’ comments:
"We were blown away by the passion and energy that Sam portrayed through his submission detailing the humanitarian work that he has undertaken both for the British Red Cross’s Emergency Response Unit and through his own volunteering action and engagement in humanitarian, aid & sanitation programmes in the DRC, Zambia and Sierra Leone. Sam has been selfless in the amount of personal time and effort he has committed to preventing the spread of infectious diseases and specifically Ebola. Sam truly embodies the concept of “Amicus Humani Generis” or friend of the human race."
Judges’ comments:
"This entry stood out because of the team’s mission, courage and determination to work differently. Embracing ‘co-production’ and working with communities, the team set out to really make a difference to health and wellbeing outcomes. Taking on this challenge, learning and working together, co-production is already leading to positive changes and improvements through: community spirit and health champions; asset-based approaches to health and wellbeing; collective community identity and a clear vision and focussed action for good emotional and mental wellbeing. Local people are actively participating with the team and they say that the community has become stronger."
Judges’ comments:
"The judges felt that Lindsey’s work with final year students, providing work placements and mentoring, was an outstanding example of giving back to the profession. This is a fantastic achievement given that Lindsey also lead a team of 20 contractors in her own workplace to deliver over 10,000 kitchen inspections. Her continued work bringing the private sector and university programmes closer together is to be applauded and will have a long lasting and positive impact on new Environmental Health Practitioners entering the profession."
Judges’ comments:
"This entry has shown how Universities educating future members of the environmental health profession can work well in partnership with local authorities and provide additional resource to obtain vital information on private sector housing, proactive activity which local government cuts have constrained. This information supports the development of effective strategies for dealing with the problems faced by tenants in the PRS. At the same time, the work helps students develop the necessary skills and improves their future employability. This project combined theoretical learning with practical application but also encouraged students to think about publishing their work via a research poster."
