Governance volunteering isn’t about ticking boxes - it’s about working together to shape the future of environmental health. You’ll join a supportive team helping CIEH stay true to its mission of creating safer, cleaner and healthier environments for the benefit of all.

We are especially keen to hear from individuals who reflect the diversity of the profession and the communities we serve.

Benefits of volunteering

  • Use your voice to influence the direction of the profession
  • Grow your leadership skills and confidence in a welcoming environment
  • Meet inspiring people who care about making a difference
  • Be part of something bigger, help us meet our public interest obligations with transparency and integrity

"As a volunteer I've enjoyed connecting with like-minded professionals and working on a shared ambition to support the CIEH through a period of significant change.
James Howe, Appointments and Remuneration Committee Chair

Many of our volunteers have full time jobs and other commitments, so we aim to make your involvement as manageable as possible.

  • We'll give you advance notice for meetings and projects
  • Most of our meetings are held virtually, so you can join from wherever you are
  • If you have any questions or want to learn more, we’re happy to connect you with one of our committee chairs for a chat – please email Marilyn Morgan, Executive Assistant, at [email protected]

We want our governance roles to reflect the diversity of the profession and the communities we serve. You don’t need to be a governance expert - just bring your enthusiasm, perspective, and your commitment to environmental health.

Are you in the early stages of your environmental health career? Join our Membership, Learning and the Profession Advisory Group (MLPAG) for a chance to:

  • Gain insight into strategic decision-making and governance
  • Develop leadership skills in a supportive environment
  • Contribute fresh perspectives that help shape the future of the profession

We value your voice and encourage you to apply. No prior governance experience is required, just your enthusiasm and commitment.

Non-members welcome

You don’t need to be a CIEH member to get involved. If you bring relevant experience, a passion for environmental health, and a desire to contribute to our mission, we’d love to hear from you. We currently have non-member roles available in our Membership, Profession and Policy Advisory Group, and Risk and Audit Committee (RAC). Your external perspective can be a powerful asset in helping us grow and evolve.

"I joined the Risk and Audit Committee as a career risk professional looking to share my experience and get a more rounded perspective on how risk is managed across the charity sector. One of the things I've really appreciated is getting an insight into what a specialist or leadership committee needs from an organisation to provide effective counsel. It's also increased my confidence navigating a committee structure, which has definitely improved my value back in my home organisation."
Matt Thwaite, Risk and Audit Committee Chair
