The importance of food allergen awareness

According to the FSA, in the UK an estimated two million people are living with a diagnosed food allergy and 600,000 with Coeliac Disease.

It is critical therefore, that everyone responsible for preparing, handling and packaging food is fully aware of what could trigger an allergic reaction and understands the precautions that must be taken to adhere to strict government criteria and ensure food is safe for consumption.

Food that might be perfectly safe for one person to eat may also be harmful to another, resulting in allergic reactions that can range from mild to life-threatening.

In addition to the danger to public health, this can create risks for organisations managing food items across any part of its cycle, from production to plate. There are large fines in place for non-compliance with strict government regulations, in addition to the risk to the success and reputation of your organisation.
