Developing your leadership skills

Navigating a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) world means operating with an adaptable leadership style, thinking big picture, remaining agile to respond to short term wins and becoming comfortable with being uncomfortable. Leaders who can embrace uncertainty and innovation are able to thrive in challenging situations.

We simply can not predict or risk assess for every eventuality when the world and what we do is changing so rapidly. Whether you are an EHP working within regulatory services, within an organisation, in government, the military or academia at any level there will be elements of leadership across your role.

As EHPs with strong technical skills it can be challenging to shift from taking charge of your own responsibilities and driving results via your own efforts. Self awareness is important. Everyone will have a different style or approach. Effective leadership often requires a combination of styles tailored to a specific need or circumstance.

Autocratic leaders favour a top down approach where the leader makes decisions dictated to subordinates. Whilst this can facilitate quick decision making and consistent implementation it may lead to decreased morale, loss of motivation and high pressure due to a lack of autonomy for individuals to achieve their goals. Research shows this style tends to stifle creativity and innovation.

Democratic leaders emphasise participation in decision-making. This is about open communication channels, collaboration and seeking input from teams before making decisions. Studies show this style fosters a sense of ownership and empowerment leading to higher levels of motivation and goal attainment. Organisations are multifaceted and this considers all potential opportunities

Transactional leaders operate on a system of reward and punishment based on performance. Leaders create clear, rigid expectations with rewards and consequences for failing to meet their expectations. Whilst this style provides structure and accountability the organisation can become limited by a perception of what is “right” and “wrong.” This style can work well where tasks are routine within an existing structure of procedures.

Transformational leaders inspire and motivate their teams by articulating a compelling vision of the future and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. These leaders allow space for growth and development encouraging innovation and creativity. This leadership style has been shown to be associated with the highest levels of employee engagement, job satisfaction and goal achievement. By supporting, empowering and enabling their people these leaders can unlock the full potential of diverse teams to reach their goals and go beyond.
