Honorary Members 2024

CIEH members are very loyal and it has been a longstanding arrangement for us to repay this loyalty with an award of Honorary membership for those who have been members for 50 years*.

Honorary members are issued with a certificate to mark the occasion and are no longer required to pay an annual subscription fee.

This year’s awardees are listed below. According to our records** their memberships commenced in 1974, the same year as the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Control of Pollution Act, as well as a far-reaching reorganisation of local government that would have profound consequences for our predecessor organisation the Association of Public Health Inspectors and the environmental health workforce generally.

It is not possible to comprehensively cover each of their contributions to the profession and CIEH in this short blog post and having only joined CIEH in the year 2000 my knowledge of their earlier work is sketchy at best.

Nigel Haverson was stalwart of Council meetings when these were all-day affairs involving up to 72 Trustees. He was very active in the Sussex branch and also with the International Federation of Environmental Health. Prior to retirement Nigel was Head of Public Health and Licensing at Horsham District Council, although I seem to recall a conversation more recently when he was working with the Food Standards Agency.

I enjoyed working with Alan Watt over several years whilst he served on our Membership and the Profession Advisory Group (MPAG). He previously worked as Head of Hygiene and Safety at McDonalds.

David Statham was the first Chair of MPAG. but is far better known for his time as Director of Enforcement at the Food Standards Agency. David served on CIEH’s Council from 1980-2000 and was its Chair in 1995.

Stephen Battersby should need no introduction really and I am a bit nonplussed about having to write one. His work on housing standards and editorship of Clays Handbook of Environmental Health should be familiar to everyone reading this. Stephen earned an MBE for services to environmental health in 2014 and is a past President of CIEH.

Tim Everett is also a past President and also held the role of Executive Director of Professional Services at CIEH. Prior to that he had been Strategic Director of Adur District and Worthing Borough Councils and Executive Head of Public Protection at Sutton. He has recently sponsored our annual Research Award and is currently working on his own PhD. Tim is perhaps best known to a large number of members for his legal guidance and training.

Finally, Paul Robinson was the first CIEH member I ever met, when he interviewed me for a job along with Admin Manager Dee Jones in the year 2000. It was an absolute pleasure to work with Paul during his time as Director of Education and Professional Standards and I am greatly indebted to him. It was brilliant to collaborate with him again last year on an EHN article about the twenty-year anniversary of Chartered Status for EHPs.

*You will notice that the awardees this year appear to all be men, which is usually the case. The profession became more gender balanced in the 1980s. It will be interesting to see if this is reflected in future awards of 50 year memberships. I am conscious that women are more likely to have career breaks which may have an impact on their ability to accrue 50 years of continuous membership, so we shall need to be mindful of indirect discrimination I think.
