Food Delivery Platforms Must Continue Work to Improve Hygiene Standards

Responding to the BBC’s research into food delivery platforms and food hygiene, CIEH has expressed concern and urged the platforms to continue work to drive up food hygiene standards.

The research found that food delivery platforms, such as Just Eat and Deliveroo, are hosting takeaway outlets with FSA hygiene ratings of “one”; meaning they need major improvement. In total there were more than 400 outlets with this rating appearing on the platforms.

Kate Thompson, Wales Director at CIEH, said:

“These findings are concerning.

We have been working positively with Just Eat and we know that they, and other platforms, are working hard to drive up food hygiene standards and are fully aware of their unique responsibility in this area.

However, it is disappointing that outlets with the minimum FSA rating are still prevalent on these platforms. Now is the time for these companies to further demonstrate their commitment to improving food hygiene and continue to deliver tangible progress.

Despite limited resources, environmental health professionals do fantastic work across the country carrying out food inspections to protect consumers and provide them with the information they need to make informed choices about food.

Both CIEH and Just Eat share a common goal of wanting to drive up standards across the board. We look forward to working with both them and the FSA going forwards to make sure that the food we eat is safe and that high hygiene standards are promoted.”
