CIEH launch updated Manifesto in aim to raise profile of environmental health among policymakers

CIEH have today launched its Manifesto for environmental health to raise the profile of the profession among policymakers and to outline some of its key policy objectives. 

Writing to all members of both Houses of Parliament, including members of both the Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet, CIEH have launched their campaign in a bid to ensure any incoming government acknowledges the vital role the CIEH’s membership community plays in protecting public health.

With members working in diverse fields such as food safety and integrity, housing, health & safety, public health, and environmental protection, it is crucial policymakers are aware of the vital role environmental health plays in maintaining standards in public health protection.

Within the Manifesto, CIEH calls for support for a range of policy objectives, such as:

• Urging the UK Government to retain existing regulatory standards as ensured by retained EU law, as well as seeking clarification on the impact ‘Smarter Regulation’ will have on regulatory standards. 
• Taking more urgent action on air pollution, via more ambitious air quality targets, regulating domestic solid fuel burners in urban areas and introducing a Nitrogen Reduction Strategy.
• Making it easier for local authorities in England to use selective licensing schemes to improve housing conditions.
• Making the display of Food Hygiene Rating Scores mandatory in England
• Asking the Government to work with CIEH to improve the recruitment and retention of Environmental Health Professionals.

Ahead of any forthcoming General Election, CIEH hope to meaningfully engage members of the Cabinet and Shadow Cabinet in a bid to influence the policy agenda of any future government. Furthermore, CIEH are calling on parliamentarians to demonstrate their support for CIEH’s policies via tabling written questions, speaking in debates, writing to Minsters and sharing their support on social media.
