CIEH welcome the passage of ground-breaking legislation to tackle air and noise pollution in Wales

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) warmly welcomes the recent passing of the ground-breaking Environment (Air Quality and Soundscapes) (Wales) Bill to address air and noise pollution in Wales, a significant stride towards a cleaner, healthier, and greener future.

The World Health Organisation has described air pollution as the world’s largest single environmental health risk and noise pollution as the second largest risk in Western Europe. Therefore, this development echoes CIEH's vision of fostering environments that are cleaner, safer, and healthier, reflecting our enduring commitment to environmental health and sustainability.

As an active participant in the Cross-Party Group on a Clean Air Act in Wales, CIEH has been at the forefront of advocating for this vital piece of legislation. The testimony of CIEH members, Kristian James and Colin Cobbing, before the Climate Change, Environment and Infrastructure Committee in the Senedd, has been instrumental in shaping the Bill and raising awareness of environmental health considerations during the legislative process.

This legislation is a significant accomplishment in delivering upon CIEH’s strategic vision of creating cleaner, safer, healthier environments for all. It highlights the crucial role of environmental health professionals in shaping and implementing policies that have a direct impact on the wellbeing of communities.
