30 January 2023, Ross Matthewman

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) has partnered with The Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) to support environmental health professionals in discovering and developing their leadership skills.

The ‘Introduction to Leadership’ online course combines online learning resources with interactive guidance from leadership experts. Designed around TILM’s Dimensions of Leadership, the course focuses on five key components - Authenticity; Vision; Achievement; Ownership; and Collaboration. The programme provides individuals with 12 months access to the modules, allowing the learner to complete the course at their own pace and gain 20 hours of CPD.

The course is open to members and non-members and can be joined at any time by contacting the CIEH team on +44 (0)20 7827 5800.

Topics covered in the affordable course include:

  • 'Knowing yourself' better
  • How your values fit with your organisation
  • Developing the resilience to cope with uncertainty.

Learners will discover the core capabilities and skills needed to succeed, including developing high-performing teams, gaining support from managers, leading through change to deliver results, making effective decisions, evaluating risks to the business and honing negation skills.

Dr Phil James, CIEH Chief Executive Officer said:

“I’m delighted that our partnership with The Institute of Leadership and Management will give talented environmental health professionals the opportunity to develop confidence and competence across a range of leadership attributes. Our members told us that leadership development was high on their agenda, so we’re providing this highly-accessible programme in response to that, serving to benefit their future careers.

Environmental health professionals are experts in identifying and managing potential health hazards, whether they be in the air we breathe, the water we drink, or the food we eat. This uniquely positions them to take on leadership roles.

They are also well-versed in navigating complex regulations and collaborating with diverse stakeholders and cannot only identify problems but also develop and implement solutions that are both effective and sustainable. Their ability to communicate effectively with a wide audience means they understand how to build and maintain partnerships that are essential for achieving positive outcomes.”

Gaynor Lewis, Director of Strategic Partnership at the ILM said:

“We’re delighted to be working in partnership with CIEH to develop the Introduction to Leadership – online course with our internationally recognised accreditation, Institute Approved.  Supporting and developing confident, future-ready leaders has never been more crucial and we’re proud to support CIEH as they provide world-class development across the sector and help us to achieve our mission – ‘inspiring great leadership, everywhere’.”
