CIEH responds to reports on proposed changes to food hygiene delivery model

The Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) is aware of the recent article published in The Grocer regarding proposed changes by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to the food hygiene delivery model. According to the article, the FSA is considering shifting the responsibility for food hygiene inspections of large supermarket chains to the retailers themselves, allowing them to submit data from their third-party audits instead of undergoing inspections by local authorities.

We recognise that this proposal represents a significant change from the current system, which has been instrumental in maintaining public confidence in food safety since its implementation.

CIEH is actively seeking clarification from the FSA that this article is factually accurate and if so, to confirm that these proposals will undergo a full public consultation. It is essential that all stakeholders, particularly environmental health professionals, are given the opportunity to review and contribute to any changes that could impact food safety and public health.

In anticipation of further details being made available by the FSA, we will convene a meeting of our Food Advisory Panel to thoroughly assess the implications of these proposals and to develop an informed response.
