Overview
In module one of our ship sanitation series, we will discuss the aims and provisions of the International Health Regulations (IHR), in relation to ship inspections and points of entry. We will cover the key legal provisions of the IHR, charging mechanisms, and practical aspects of planning inspections – before boarding, on-board and after disembarkation.
This training event is recommended for those who are relatively new to ship inspection or looking for an overview of the application of the IHR in relation to ship sanitation inspections.
Bookings are also open for module two and module three in our ship sanitation series. These modules will focus on specific technical aspects, including water systems and sewage treatment.
Each module is stand-alone and you don’t have to attend all of them. You are welcome to book a specific module or you can book onto all three to immerse yourself in the entire series.

- Consider best practices and inspection techniques to effectively carry out ship sanitation inspections in relation to the WHO ‘Handbook for Inspection of Ships and Issuance of Ship Sanitation Certificates’
- Improve your understanding of the legal and financial framework

Martin’s experience surrounds Port Health and EHO roles and responsibilities, and he has delivered occasional Inland Imported Food Courses on behalf of the CIEH for the Food Standards Agency (FSA). His responsibilities in his work for the Ministry of Health, Government of Bermuda included setting up and recruiting and managing the new port health section within the environmental health department, to act as the leading technical expert on matters relating to port health at the L.F Wade International Airport and three authorised seaports at Bermuda, while also developing imported food legislation plus implementing imported food check systems for Bermuda. Martin has previously worked for the Suffolk Coastal Port Health Authority as a Port Health Officer, which involved him carrying out required ship inspections of vessels using the port, as well as protecting the public and animal health through the enforcement of UK and EU legislation.
